Using lighting...

Light is often linked to genre or time of day.
Lighting indicates high or low quality, sets the mood etc.

Things to look out for...

When using the cameras in auto focus they will adjust to changing light - sometimes causing grainy shots.
Use the aperture settings to let more or less light in.
Think about the time of day when shooting ; golden hours.
Big changes in natural  lighting can impact continuity.,
Time of day you wish to depict.

Types of lighting...

  • 3 lights create a normal-looking scene with soft shadows and average colours.
  • Chiaroscuro lighting is characterised by harsh lighting that creates an extreme contrast between different areas of the shot.
  • High key lighting uses harsh, bright lights to reduce contrast in a scene, giving the scene a white-washed, clean look that does not have any shadow in-frame.
  • Low-key lighting is all about creating shadows and contrast between colours. It is used to create atmosphere, it is all about mystery and drama
  • Back-lighting is when the scene is directly lit from behind, usually by some form of natural light.
  • Natural lighting can either be coming from the sun or a light source that has a yellow or white hue.
  • Artificial lighting is light that comes from man-made light sources, they often have a blue-grey hue or a harsh yellow-orange hue.

My initial idea is called  Teaching Upton Sixth Form, an insight into the lives of students who are struggling on a daily basis with exam stress and other daily problems.

Script-

Mr Welch - ' People view Upton as a school for delinquents  less educated children and rarely a first choice school. From this we as a school and sixth form, want to educate the community and make them see our potential as a school and become everyone's first choice.'  (VOICEOVER)

Student - ' I actually hate this school'
Sixth former - ' I used to hate lower school but now i have realised they were the best years of my life'

'people view tupton as a school for delinquents' ---- for this i will have a montage of naughty students misbehaving around school.
' less educated students ' ----- video of a student not understanding a question their being asked

Location
School classrooms and social area, also in the courtyard and on the field

Lighting
I will use natural lighting because its a natural setting.

Codes and conventions of reality TV.

Codes - Technical codes, Character codes, Narrative codes, Cultural codes.

1. The Mighty Redcar BBC2
Media Language - Cut away, Establishing shot, Close up
How it represents the people - Every day life, makes the audience feel for the characters/empathy,

How the codes/conventions are used - Cultural codes are used: showing the beach using an establishing shot. Shows that its slightly run down.
Soundtrack from the 80's could suggest the town has had better days.

'were fighting for our future' personal , engaging.
Introduced to 3 characters.
